Sculptured was fashioned in the Summer of
1996 by Don Anderson, with an
inspiration to create interesting and challenging
music, Don immediately began
writing material for what would become the
three song demo, "Fulfillment In
Tragedy". A drummer was called upon;
John Schlegel, which Don had known for
years. The disciplined duo spent weeks
crafting the songs, "Lit By The Light Of
Morning", "Words of Silent Fowler" and "Our
Illuminated Tomb" for recording
during the last, cold Winter months of the
year. Two studio musicians were called
upon to contribute their genius. Brian
Yager complemented the music with his lush
clean vocals, and trumpet jazz musician Burke
Harris laid down some fine solos.
Once the demo was released it gained momentous
positive feedback from
magazines around the world which lead to a
2 CD deal with Mad Lion Records
from Poland. The debut CD would contain
the same three songs from the demo as
well as four new ones including the mysterious
demo title song "Fulfillment In
Tragedy".
The debut CD, "The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled"
will be set upon the world in
February/March. Prior to the CD release
Mad Lion secured an American/Japan
licensing deal with The End Records that would
provide a fine promotion
worldwide.
After the recording of the CD, new members
had been recruited to allow
Sculptured be a live act. Nick
Wusz joined in on guitar and Jason Walton of
Sussurus Inanis and Nothing fame has offered
his bass work.
Sculptured has declared war on the ironies
of love. Through rich, melodic music
and lyrics detailing the catastrophic way
in which humans treat each other through
the horrid burden of romance, Sculptured
will soon see the light of morning and be
rest assured that true love is but a sharp
and quick arrow away..

“The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled”
Another album from The End is in the form
of SCULPTURED's debut release, The Spear
of the Lily is Aureoled. They were also featured
on the . . . Until the End of Time compilation with the track "Together
with the Seasons", which kicks things off for this record. Sculptured is
truly a unique band; it's hard to believe they're American! Every time
I listen to this, I'm astounded by the amount of genius put into this album,
and there are only three members in the band, only two of them being actual
musicians, the third solely doing vocals. The aforementioned song is a
good one, but "Almond Beauty", which follows, has to be my absolute favorite
on the entire album. The trio works perfectly together to mix elements
of doom metal with death metal along with elements of classical music and
jazz
to form stunning pieces of art. Yes, THIS
is art. The mix of vocals works well with the music, too. The death vocals
are of the raspy, whispery variety.
The clean vocals are well done, but I wish
they would have been a little less glam-y. Don't get me wrong, the clean
vocals are great! But, I think the effect they'd have on the musical atmosphere
would have been better if it was more of a depressing sound or more monotone-sounding.
As it is, this is a fucking superb album. There's even the use of a
trumpet! And it works well with the music,
especially the jazzier part found in the song
"Her Silence", another favorite. I still can't
believe bands this talented come from the States. I was under the impression
they were from Finland until I looked at the CD booklet. This is too hard
to describe with mere words; it must be experienced. I know I'm gushing
on
and on about this band, but you must hear
it to believe it. --goden

“The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled”
Obviously this is a label that will not put
all their stock in one style of music, and could
be the very reason they will be successful.
Here is Sculptured a band that truly defies categorization. If forced to
put a label on them, I would say technical atmospheric Death metal, but
even this would be putting limitations on what this band is really about.
The
musicianship is much better than 90% of the
death metal bands in existence, and there is
obviously some other influences outside of
the metal spectrum…Fans of Edge of Sanity's "Crimson" would do well to
check this out, because there are some parallels to that excellent CD.

“The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled”
...Their CD, "The Spear of the Lily
is Aureoled" is an impressive release, although to
nail down an exact style would be hard.
There is everything from Death Metal to Doom to Jazz. A very nice mix of
style that works well. The songs can move from highly energetic and fast,
so slow, dark, and moving, and then back again... I'm generally not a fan
of horns,
but they are used here sparsely, and they
are used well. Seven brilliant songs from this [US] band that is sure to
impress those in search of originality...
